Steve Payne (RM) delivers superb goalkeeping masterclass

Steve was awesome, a lot of really useful, simple tips for how I can improve as goalie

On Wednesday 7th August, Steve Payne (Ex Men’s 1stXI) came to take a special Pre-season focused training session.
OPM goalies Martin, Matt and Maddie ‘ The 3 Ms’ were treated to a 90 minute training session from Steve. Steve is a Royal Marine goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach, who has represented the Navy at the Masters Cup in New Zealand and won the Inter-Services multiple times.
The three keepers were put through a punishing (but enjoyable) Session.
They worked on positioning, movement, clearing the ball and spacial awareness. They focussed on their technique when kicking and using their gloves.

It was interesting to watch Steve's approach. The technical coaching focus started with the basic drills:
Then it moved on to some, high intensity, set plays. We hope to have Steve back at some point to continue his work.

This is what the keepers themselves thought:

Martin Rattle (1st XI Men’s Keeper)
I really enjoyed the goalkeeper session at training, it's really helpful getting some one on one pointers on techniques to work on from someone who has played at a much higher level than I have ever done. Although we worked hard, it was easy to see the relevance of each drill. Steve was always happy to explain and redo anything to allow us to practice what we had just taken on.

Matt Chan (3rd XI Men’s Keeper)
I felt knackered afterwards but learnt loads. ? Steve was awesome, a lot of really useful, simple tips for how I can improve as goalie, really hard work but I really can see the benefit of it. Simple things to practice but important for the long term. I would love to have him back to the club again.

Maddie Rolls (1st XI Ladies Keeper)
I really enjoyed the GK session with Steve, he put us through our paces and I certainly felt it the next day. A whole session dedicated GK coaching time, without the outfield players, is rare so it was brilliant of the Club to arrange this for us. Hope we get some more!! Thanks to Steve and Rob
