Duchy B vs O.P.M. B
By Rhys Logan
Thriller in the Arctic!
Robert Logan reports:
The 3’s left the City in dribs and drabs. The last Car containing Captain Rhys and Jack.
With the loss of Josh to illness, the 3’s were down to the Bare 11 including the injured Joe Johnson.
But wait, Pete Smith had made himself available to travel, thanks Pete.
Getting to pool school went without a hitch.
There we met up with the others, including Corey and the Friday advance party Matt Kirby, coming via the punch bowl and ladle Carnon Downs. More on Matt and Corey later.
It was a very bitter biting wind that greeted us pitch side.
We were readying for the off.
After some very rigorous stretching Matt was donning his kit ready for the challenge, the Johnson’s, Joe and Ian went for a quick 4 miler, whilst the rest of the athletes did varying levels of warm up routines.
A quick sweat box and we were off.
From the start O.P.M. pressed high and were causing problems with the direct running of Joe Loughran, Corey and Jack.
However, it was Duchy who took the lead, following a scramble in the circle, a prone Duchy player somehow found the net.
Almost immediately O.P.M. struck back, a poor hit out from a duchy defender was pounce on by Jack who played in Joe Loughran, he dummied the keeper and finished with aplomb.
I then missed Corey, leaving the pitch to throw up!
However, I did notice Matt holding his stomach, “Matt are your ribs still hurting”? No Rob it’s the 8 pints I had last night sloshing around”!!
1-1 halftime all to play for.
A swift break, almost from the restart, saw Jack one on one with the keeper, who made an excellent save to push his shot on the post. However, Joe Loughran had anticipated the rebound 2-1.
O.P.M. again pressed hard and against the run of play were again caught on the counter 2-2.
Several chances came and went for both sides with Rhys, Ade and Sean staying tight at the back and Ian and Joe Johnson mopping up the midfield.
The game continued in the same end to end fashion, and with Pete and Adam combining well to find Joe Loughran, Corey or Jack, O.P.M. continued to look dangerous.
Following another scramble in the O.P.M. D, Duchy were awarded a stroke for a foot stop on the line by Rhys.
Matt saved the resultant flick to keep his team in the game.
Another quick break by Duchy saw a player shoot early from the top of the D, Rhys had got across and managed to partially block the shot.
However, the ball, as if in slow motion travelled over the head of Matt and into the net 3-2.
With time running out, O.P.M. were straight back down the other end with Joe Loughran cannoning a reverse off the upright.
A series of chances came and went for O.P.M. and it was all hands to the pump for the Duchy defence who managed to close out the game.
Full time 3-2.
Corey straight out the gate to throw up again, this time outside the perimeter fence.
