Supporters brought the Ladies Victory
Today’s match report is written in the style of OPM hockey reports from the 1940’s and 50’s.... They were, how can I put this?, a bit more forthright and brief. I will attempt to include some original phrases.
OPM Ladies 1st XI vs Marjon’s Ladies 4th XI
3rd November 2018. Final score 3-0.
The OPM team appeared somewhat longer in the tooth than their opponents, with the exception of three junior players to reduce the average age. Marjon’s team had the majority of possession in the first half, valiant defending from the OPM keeping the score line bare. A goal from captain Katie Warren settled the team, surprising no one more than herself perhaps. Newcomers Izzy P and Kate S played with a confidence belying their young years, both showing promise and determination down the left. Half-time 1-0.
A sensible but pointed team talk from Mr Thomson, highlighting mistakes to correct and possible weaknesses in the opposing team that should be exploited. Also a request to film the activities from a bystander; permission denied.
A well-worked short corner routine and excellent finish from defender Kirstin Clark made the score line 2-0, and another goal swiftly followed by Genevieve McBride (pitch performance apparently unhindered by her recent return to alcohol and late-night frivolity). Close chances also for Luci Barber and Claire Warren, sadly no score-line contributions. OPM looked the better team in the second half, some poor decisions from Marjon’s team management causing them to lose shape and concede possession.
A shameful loss of self control from both captain and vice captain saw both issued with green cards in the second half. Katie Warren must play the ball NOT the stick and maintain decorum and focus befitting her position for the full 70 minutes. Pippa Jephcott, being too short in the leg to reach a lovely pass from Katie Perkins, flung her stick in a manner most unbecoming of a lady. Despite these copybook blots, the team performance was one to be commended, although they are by no means the finished article yet. Final score 3-0.
Ditzy - Katie Perkins for (amongst other things) dribbling in a circle off the touchline.
Player - Izzy P for an unflustered and committed debut.
Seriously though, fantastic team effort girls, and a great win to add to our season. So proud of a brilliant performance from each and every one of you! Thanks also to our supporters, friends and family who showed up pitchside and cheered us on. You make more difference than you know.
