Dawn patrol battled hard for 2-0 win
Early, so early! Great team performance, especially from the younger players who stepped up.
The day dawned bright, cold, and so so so early as we met at Lipson to face down Plym Uni. Robert Logan maintained he couldn’t see, the youngsters were half asleep and the toilets were closed; AGAIN!!!
We were slow to get going, only Hazel appearing to be raring to go after going for a jog before the rest of us had even arrived (#keenbean); Katie had her usual panic over which end to start; ridiculous given the sun was blinding in one specific direction ? but eventually, 9am arrived and we got going...
The first 10 minutes definitely reflected our sluggish warm up, the defence having a fair amount to do to keep the ball clear of our D; birthday girl Kirstin directing the defensive line expertly... t’other birthday girl Penny ran all over the place chasing some of their fast energetic players; and eventually we settled into a bit more of a rhythm. That said; half time saw us 0-0 despite some great hockey, near misses and a couple of shorts. We had to defend 3 shorts in a row as Katie “Perky” opted for the Foot-ball technique ? and Hazel even had to make a clearance ?.
Sweets and fluids; and some chatter from our spectating crowd and we were back on the pitch, this time facing the winter sun ☀️ - some lovely passages of play saw us putting some real pressure on their goal, Kate S and Tilly on the right & left respectively started to hold their width and take every opportunity to drive the line. Tilly & Emily were perilously close to putting away some crosses; cue groans galore from the sideline!! Next time, next time!!! Finally a short corner and the Scroll of Boom came into fruition... a beautiful set play between Claire and Genevieve saw a perfect goal from the unicorn ? herself; celebrations ? all round. Lauren also settled into the game in the second half, breaking down play and attacking loose balls all over the place. Several more short corners and we were denied by a packed Uni defence over and over again. Katie and Kate has a lovely hook up resulting in Katie dribbling into the D and somehow pushing it past the keeper; not sure who was more surprised ?. During the second half we went from strength to strength; Leigh-Anne growing in confidence in the CB role, Amanda holding her own on the right, Perky having a stormer on the left and Gen appearing to be everywhere all at once in the middle!! Despite holding a lot of the possession, the final whistle blew (much to Katie’s snotty relief) and we finished 2-0. A great testament to the relentless hard work of everyone on the pitch!
Huge thank you to all our supporters; Daddy Hall, Caitlin, Brilliant George (his words ?), Tommo, Grandad Warren and Rob!! Player votes went all over the place; a treue reflection of the team performance; Perky, Tilly, Lauren, and Gen, leaving a tie between Big Katie & Little Kate (cue rendition of Big Fish Little Fish Cardboard Box - if you’re old enough to remember this ?). Could wax lyrical for hours about today’s game, proper buzzing to see the team gel so well despite so many new faces to Saturday hockey; particularly impressed with the “youngsters” - well done ?
There were some votes for Ditzy; Claire for her line confusion, Lauren for tripping over her own feet, but the absent Ola/Pippa metaphically took home the duck for their alcohol abuse and duck imprisonment!!
Hope the birthday girls have a fab time celebrating, (Anneliese too) and roll on next weeks Cup Match!!!! Xxx ps think I lost my way on the theme thing this week but I’m cannot be bothered to rewrite ?
