Season 2009/2010

03/10/2009 (H) vs Torbay A, South Division 2
OPMs started the league season with a convincing 6-2 home win over Torbay A. OPMs stole possession from the push-back and scored in the opening 20 seconds which set the pace of the first half. A hat-trick from Stuart Bennett, a short corner drag from James Frost and a solo goal from Alex Peacock gave the home side a 5-1 half-time lead.
OPMs didn't have it all their own way in the second half, due to better build up play from the visitors and some lazier passing from the hosts. Torbay scored to make it 5-2 before Martin Simpson-Scott finished a cross from Jason Sweby to finish the game off.

10/10/2009 (A) vs Yeovil & Sherborne A, South Division 2
by Alex Peacock

Opm's were faced with a difficult away game for the second league game of the new season away to Yeovil & Sherborne. The 2 hour drive was worsened by an early push back, too early as it turned out for the opposition keeper! After an extended 15mins delay the umpires were finally forced to start the game before Yeovil & Sherborne's keeper was ready. Opm's made sure that they didn't waste the opportunity and piled on the pressure with goals from Bennett and Simpson-Scott in the first 10mins before the keeper managed to make it on to the pitch.

With a keeper in place, a newly energized and motivated side faced Opm's and the momentum of the game took a drastic turn. Only a fantastic defensive display from Chopper & Frude backed up by Louie & Piers kept Yeovil at bay. The defensive unit worked tirelessly, but if it wasn't for the unanimously voted for mom Payne, Yeovil & Sherborne would have had a couple of goals themselves, but some frankly inspirational goalkeeping somehow kept Yeovil out.

After a brief half time break, having soaked up a lot of pressure on an extremely warm October day, the match continued in much the same vain. A young Yeovil & Sherborne side kept on the pressure until a well struck shot bobbling awkwardly finally got the better of Payne. Opm's kept there heads up however and scored a fantastic breakaway goal with Simpson-Scott leaving their defense for dead to set up Bennett for an easy tap in. Opm's did have a few other chances of breakaway goals in the second half, but unusually were unable to take them. Thanks to a brilliant defensive unit display though, 3 goals were ample to ensure the 3 points.

Score: Yeovil & Sherborne A 1-3 O.P.M.

Team: Steve Payne (mom), Charlie Helyer, Chris Frude, Lewis Gunn-Colling, Piers Critchlow, Alex Peacock, James Frost, Laurence Peacock, Ben Locke, Martin Simpson-Scott, Stuart Bennett

05/12/2009 (H) vs Dart, South Division 2

OPMs moved into second place with a tough 5-3 home win over Dart. Two similar teams and always a close encounter, it came as a surprise to both sides when OPMs were 2-0 up within 10 minutes. The first, a well worked move with a mazy run from Mozza ending with a pass to Stuart Bennett who nailed the finish. The second was Bennett's turn for a mazy run, but he scored from an impossibly tight angle that everyone reckons must have been a cross! Dart did not capitulate, however, and grabbed one back before half time.

Once again, OPMs came out of the traps better and had restored a comfortable cushion when Bennett struck for his third, followed by James Frost being in the right place for a Bennett rebound to hit home a fourth. Again, however, the game turned around and Dart hit hard, coming back with two more goals and setting the game up for a great finish. It was OPMs, however, who got the next goal which sealed the win, Mozza ending a solo run with a neat finish.

An excellent match against a team who like to play hockey as much as we do.

16/01/2010 (A) vs Torbay A, South Division 2

OPMs staged a remarkable comback, trailing 3-0 to win 5-4 and maintain second place away at Torbay A. The home side caught OPMs asleep and were 3-0 up after 20 minutes. From the pushback after the third goal, Laurence Peacock immediately got one back, followed swiftly by two goals from Martin Simpson-Scott to make it 3-3 at half time. OPMs then took the lead from a short corner in the second half, scored by skipper Alex Peacock, before Torbay levelled with a fantastic goal. An identical short corner routine moments later gave OPMs the advantage once more, scored again by Alex Peacock.

13/02/2010 (H) vs PGSOB A, South Division 2

OPMs pulled out a hard fought 2-1 home win over city rivals PGSOB A to maintain top spot in South Division 2. The game began evenly, although OPMs made more scoring chances, only to be thwarted by in-form PG's keeper Nick Triscott. But when Martin Simpson-Scott scored from an impossible angle after good work by Stuart Bennett, the home side took more control. However, they didn't make this count and 10 minutes later, PGs equalised on the break.

PGs took control in the first 10 minutes of the second half, making good use of OPM's sloppy passing that had not featured at all during the first half. However, the hosts finally switched back on and started to press again. Laurence Peacock put considerable pressure on the PGs defence and when he stole the ball, Stuart Bennett was on hand to smash home what was to be the winner.

A special mention goes to Charlie Helyer who picked up a unanimous Man of the Match award and was the reason why keeper Steve Payne had only one shot to save in the whole match.

Score: O.P.M. 2-1 PGSOB A

06/03/2010 (A) vs Plymouth Marjon B, South Division 2

An under-strength OPM side put in a below par performance but dug deep to grind out a point away at Plymouth Marjon B. Marjons were much the better side for most of the game, taking the lead on three occasions. But OPMs, not playing particularly well, showed the fighting spirit that has put them in the promotion fight this season. Martin Simpson-Scott scored two brilliant equalisers, and James Frost came to the rescue in the last minute to savalge a point.

13/03/2010 (H) vs Isca B, South Division 2

OPMs held on to their promotion place with a nail-biting 4-3 home win against struggling Isca B. OPMs were 3-0 up after two first half goals from Martin Simpson-Scott and Laurence Peacock, followed by a second half goal from skipper Alex Peacock. But Isca worked their way back into the match, levelling at 3-3 with 10 minutes to go. Simpson-Scott had a goal disallowed before popping up on the back post again in a last minute penalty corner to score the winner and keep OPM's promotion chances in tact.

With third-placed Camborne winning 6-3 at home over PGSOB A, it comes down to the final game of the season to determine who will secure second place. OPMs face Dart and need all three points to guarantee promotion.

20/03/2010 (A) vs Dart, South Division 2

OPMs ended the season with an emphatic 5-0 away win at Dart and secured promotion to South Division 1. The game started very evenly, OPMs appearing to be a little nervous about going a goal down and not pressuring their hosts. Dart pushed forward for the first 20 minutes and controlled the game, but when OPMs won a short corner, which was converted by James Frost, the nerves were settled and the game changed. With seconds to go in the first half, Frost made a great run down the right wing and crossed to find an unmarked Martin Simpson-Scott who easily put away his first of the afternoon for 2-0.

The second half was mostly OPMs as they pushed forward in waves. It became the Mozza Show as he duly scored three more fantastic goals to completely end the game as a contest, although the 5th goal was not quite as he intended: a reverse stick strike that came up off a defender's stick and looped high over everyone and into the goal.

The game ended and OPMs celebrated a convincing win at the end of a tense season. We later learned Camborne had also won at Marjons and so the victory was needed.
