Season 2006/2007
09/09/2006 (A) vs Bodmin A, Friendly
by Ian Johnson
The new season jump-started into action as OPMs steamrollered a young Bodmin side expecting to play our ‘A’ team. In truth, they were probably hampered by the waft of burning rubber from the still smoking tyres of the club captain who had been testing the manufacturer’s claims on emergency stopping distances for the Seat Ibiza. OPMs played some flowing stuff in the September sun with Stuart claiming 4 including a mesmerising solo run and full length diving finish. James Harding scored on his debut and was visibly growing in confidence as the match wore on, even using a shoulder barge worthy of Gary Tuckett. Tim was hardly bothered and touched the ball, briefly, twice whilst maintaining a clean sheet. Indeed, the defence dealt with everything confidently with Matt deciding to play the game mainly on his knees gnawing at the ankles of the ‘long-haired-winger-from-Bodmin ‘A’ ‘(please add your own musical backing…). The response to Matt’s attentions was a wonderful triple rollover and appeals to the god’s (or umpire) for justice. This was never going to happen as the umpire was 1 eyed, 1 sided and more concerned with sticking his 10p piece under every stick to show he’d read the new 25mm restriction on stick curvature. Those players with sticks from the late 1980’s (Gary, Arthur..) will be glad to know that their beasts are now back in fashion. The Peacocks were towering with Laurence running the show like a young Bruce Forsyth and Alex showing imagination and skill on the left. Some of the older players scrubbed up well too with Ian J thrashing about in the ‘D’ despite having to deal with a flying Martin who took a certain goal off his stick. Did you get winded Mozzer…? Oh what a shame….tosser! Even Frude and Stoney got the bug, forcing their way forward sensing a goal feast. But for the Bodmin keeper it could have been 10. So, a good run out, but even more startling was the series of amazing coincidences and revelations that had built up over a pent up summer and now were unleashed:
- Charlie maintained his amazing record of scoring in the first game of every season for the last 3 league seasons and also during the last 2 summer leagues. Uncanny!
- The Bodmin changing room was again the scene for the snaking trail of water from the showers towards the kit bags reminiscent of that evil presence in that cult film (No! Charlie not ‘40 year old virgins’!) Final Destination. Coincidental!
- Rob L revealed his responsibilities for the club did not extend to warning the bar staff of our hockey fixtures but merely the “..humping and shunting…” duties. A dirty job but someone’s got to do it!
- DML are testing their employees for levels of radioactivity in their urine. Unfortunately, Rob drinks his before they can complete the test. Tangy!
- The club captain is looking to expand his interesting pubic hair collection before he puts it up for sale on Ebay. A family heirloom, I understand! Charlie was last out of the showers and looking pleased with his straggly handful. Who wants to go in Charlie’s car next week?

30/09/2006 (H) vs Bodmin A, South West Div 1
OPMs put six past Bodmin A for the second time in a month, this time in a league encounter. With a change in formation by skipper Charlie Haswell, OPMs were dominant for most of the game. Despite relentless pressure and numerous good chances, the first half was goalless, thanks largely to some resolute defending from the visitors. Martin Simpson-Scott and Stuart Bennett both had good chances and a further chance passed after Jason Sweby drew out the keeper and crossed across the face of goal, only for no one to be able to get on the end of it.
In recent times, this would have signalled a panic in OPMs and play would have become desparate; not so in this match. The home side knew the goal would come and they started the second half as well as they ended the first. With the defence having little to do, the show was run by the midfield four of Francois Ravin, Laurence Peacock, Alex Peacock & Charlie Haswell. Eventually, it was the Frenchman Ravin who opened the scoring, getting on the end of Laurence Peacock's through ball after Peacock had battled through several defenders to deliver the ball. After that, Bodmin's defence failed to hold as the goals came fast. Laurence Peacock grabbed the second with a cracking finish, Simpson-Scott scored the third. Laurence then scored with a penalty stroke followed by his brother Alex who finished off after a neat run into the D. Finally, front man Stuart Bennett grabbed a sensational sixth when a ball into the D from Mozza was hit first time on the half-volley and rocketed into the top of the goal. This was a great performance, not because of the result which really was never in doubt but because of the nature of the build-up play and the patience shown by the whole team. 07/10/2006 (A) vs Plymouth University A, South West Div 1
OPMs overcame tougher opposition in the form of Plymouth University A with a hard fought 1-0 win. As last week against Bodmin A, OPMs were in control of the first half but the game remained goalless at half-time. Unlike last week however, the opposition put on a fighting performance and kept the OPM defence busy, with noteable defending from Mssrs Frude, Stone and Johnson.
OPMs newly-discovered patience held firm as they continued to press in the second half looking for the opener. It eventually came when a through ball from Laurence Peacock found Russ Owen-Moody who hit the post, only for Stuart Bennett to tap in the rebound for his second in 2 games. Skipper Charlie Haswell went off with an injured back and OPMs found themselves under enormous pressure, greatly missing the left half. Steve in goal was enormous in the second half, communicating well with the outfield and making some excellent saves. The university couldn't make the pressure tell and when Haswell returned to the field of play, OPMs regained composure and held on for the narrowest of victories. 14/10/2006 (H) vs PGSOB A, South West Div 1
OPMs threw away a 3-0 lead at half time to lose 4-3 in a dramatic city derby. OPMs took an early lead with a strike from Chris Poplar, followed by Martin Simpson-Scott scoring a neat second. Jason Sweby added a third 15 minutes from half-time. A brilliant stick save off the line from a short corner by Ian Stone, followed by an equally brillant save by keeper Steve on the stroke of half-time maintained OPM's clean sheet.
PGs fought back in the second half, scoring 3 quick goals; when Ian Stone was sent off for arguing about the 3rd, PGs took full advantage and scored what proved to be the winner despite OPMs hitting the post to be denied an equaliser. 28/10/2006 (H) vs Plymouth Marjon C, South West Div 1
OPMs scored 3 for the third week running but once again failed to capitalise on an early advantage. OPMs were 2-0 up within 15 minutes with goals from left-winger Martin Simpson-Scott and right-winger Jason Sweby. Marjons then took control and battled back to level the game by half time. The visitors took the lead 15 minutes into the second half, but OPMs then regained control and levelled after a series of chances, Laurence Peacock finally netting. The home side were in the ascendancy for the remainder of the game but more missed chances meant the teams shared the points.

04/11/2006 (A) vs Tavistock A, South West Div 1
by Ian Stone
OPMs travelled to Tavistock on a cold afternoon and took time to settle on the very sandy and slow pitch. Martin Simpson-Scott hit the underside of the crossbar early on but the ball bounced out.
The OPM goal was rarely threatened and good work from the defence of Johnson, Frude and Stone and good keeping from Steve Payne kept the Tavy attack at bay. OPMs took the lead and never looked liked throwing it away, 3 from Simpson-Scott and a brace from Stuart Bennett, both of which were penalty flicks. One superbly roofed into the net in the first half and the second dribbled in off the keepers behind. Tavistock did score two goals both from short corners. Captain Charlie Haswell scored to make the final score 6-2 to the visitors. The score could have been a lot more if Bennett would learn to pass in the D or at least if he was going to shoot make sure he hit the target and not the fence behind or even the rugby pitch behind! James Harding received a yellow card after picking a fight with a grumpy Tavy player who also got a yellow for his threats, Paul Evans got a green for trying to calm it all down. 11/11/2006 (H) vs Truro B, South West Div 1
by Stuart Bennett
This weeks match, although containing the most stop starts ever recorded in a league game of hockey, saw some awesome team play from the OPM side. Stuart Bennett was once again on form and playing a key role in the teams attacking efforts. Despite the match winning play given by the OPM side Truro took the lead in the first half due to some very poor defence work from Ian Stone. If Ian worked a bit more on his fitness and stopped stick tackling everyone on the pitch this may have been avoided. Even though the OPM side had gone one nil down confidence was high and it was clear that we would be able to fully dominate the game. This was confirmed shortly after when Francois put away a calculated shot which had resulted from some excellent work from Paul Evans. This goal was all the OPM side needed to kick start the onslaught that followed. Stuart Bennett, the top goal scorer for the game, was the second to score for the OPM side, putting away a truly clinical goal. Having picked up an awkward pass into the D and controlled it effortlessly he managed to get a quick shot on goal which was initially saved by the keeper. Stuart, controlling the rebound, was able to make a reverse stick flick over the keeper producing what can only be described as some magical hockey. Shortly after this the half time whistle was blown with OPM side quite squarely in the lead.
In the second half Truro didn’t mange to produce very much. They had a couple of quick players that continually managed to catch Ian Stone on the back foot. Had it not been for the quick back tracking of other OPM team members, more clumsy goals might have been conceded. Apart from a few break away plays Truro only really managed to get frustrated by umpire decisions, eventually resulting in a yellow card for one of their players. Despite the lack of flowing play, the OPM side battled on throughout the second half. This half saw some more of Stuart Bennetts hockey talent, with him scoring a further three goals. His second goal was delightfully set up on a short corner. This was a new routine but worked effortlessly, with Jason Sweby playing a key role. Jason Sweby was able to pick up a switched pass from Alex Peacock and set the ball for Stuart Bennett to knock home a powerful, unstoppable strike. With spirits now on a high the team stepped it up a gear and a further three goals followed. After some good leg work, again from Paul Evans, the team were once again attacking the Truro D. A free hit resulted from this play. After an accurate hit into the D, Mozza was able to get a weasely defection into the goal. With Truro restarting the play after our goal OPM managed to quickly regain possession and recycle the ball. Following this Alex managed to slip a pass into the D and Mozza put a good shot on target; but it was rejected off the keepers pads. Luckily Stuart Bennett was poised ready for any rebound. With the ball still in the air he managed to connect and send the ball smoking into the back of the net to complete his hat trick. The next opportunity was a missed one and could easily have seen the OPM side finishing 7-1 instead of 6-1. Again, the man of the match, Stuart Bennett was able to put a shot across the goal for Mozza to simply knock home. The cross was so accurate it rebounded off of the post and Mozza was unable to react quickly enough. Had Jason Sweby been on that post it might have been a different story. After this OPM continued to control the play with Alex in the middle spreading the ball nicely from left to right stretching the Truro side. With the Truro side stretched a quick ball was injected into the D. This was picked up by Stuart Bennett who found himself in space having left is marker standing. Taking the ball under control, Stuart was able to beat another player; with his head up he looked for support. Unfortunately the simple ball did not present itself and he was on his own. Without wasting any more time Stuart was able to get a powerful first time strike on target which the keeper was only able to watch into the back of the net. This final goal drew the game to a close. If this form continues it will not be long until OPM rise to their rightful position in the league. Score: O.P.M. 6-1 Truro BOPM Scorers: François Ravin, Stuart Bennett (4), Martin Simpson-Scott

18/11/2006 (A) vs Camborne School of Mines, South West Div 1
by James Harding
OPMs went into this game looking to apply pressure on league leaders St. Austell and PGSOBs and push for promotion.
The game started brightly as usual with OPM creating several fine chances, getting closer and closer to registering an early lead. When called upon, the OPM defence was effective if unorthodox. On the left there was Stoney trying to do a Gary Tuckett, dribbling up the pitch – then somehow winning a free-hit when he lifted the ball into a Camborne kneecap. On the right was Charlie who at one point actually slide-tackled not only one of the opposition attackers but also wiped out our own Simon Quincey! In contrast, the Cornish side employed a more no-nonsense approach; a little birdy in Camborne colours had told me they had new personnel in key positions, so the ‘Ave it policy of get the ball and smash it off the sideline was well-exercised throughout the match. OPM took no pity and offered no reprieve. Rob Stroud proved that their defense wasn’t watertight, scoring the game’s only goal after 28 minutes. OPMs second short-corner of the game was defended scrappily and the ball finally found its way out to the sharp left-half. Diving at full-stretch, he managed to force the ball home into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal. This match reporter was particularly happy about this, as it provided me with the opportunity to update the scoreboard.
Towards the end of the first half, OPM produced the best chance of the game. Paul Evans was driving with the ball, Mozza and Jason Sweby alongside him against only two defenders; Paul moved the ball left to Jason, who cushioned a neat pass to the pacey Mozza. After taking a single touch to control the ball and turn to face goal, he shot for goal. However, due to his wrongly-prescribed contact lenses he lacked sufficient depth-perception to connect with the ball and an excellent chance went to waste.
The second half was much less exciting, the highlights consisting of point-blank saves from the Camborne stopper between the posts. One of these was a spectacular volley from the excellent Alex Peacock, striking the big keeper in the chest.
The performance was less than impressive but the result well deserved; the game finished 1-0 to the claret-and-blues, so we headed off to the pub for some well-earned grub.
In order to find the place, we captured a member of the Camborne team in our A-Team bus. (This could be likened to the missing armoured vehicle which recently went missing from the Stonehouse depot) Our guide, however, lead us to the wrong pub! (Mr. T: “I pity the fool!”)
Thus seven members of the OPM first team marched through the streets of Truro, our destination unknown...
It would have been better if it had stayed that way to be honest, as it turned out to be filled with drunken Cornish males singing along to Phil Collins’ Easy Lover. . Rob and Frudey included.Player ratings

25/11/2006 (H) vs Penzance A, South West Div 1
by Steve Payne
Wind, rain, hail, sunshine, rainbows, six goals, good play, goal line heroics. All in a days work for OPM first team hockey.
After a morning of sunshine in Plymouth we were treated to a special Devon hail storm as we were about to step onto the pitch. Many thanks to Rob Logan for the loan of the magic inside out reversing umbrella. No really. Anyway there were many plus points to come from Saturday. There were negatives too but we won’t talk about them. As always we started fairly strongly and after an initial surge by Penzance settled into some decent passing and movement. Persistent pressure lead to a couple of short corners, the second of which actually finding the back of the net courtesy of a well worked routine finished of by François the Gaul. OPM’s scoring a short corner whatever next.
More pressure and good work from those forward types saw the lead double courtesy of Paul who after some good work in the opposition half went in to challenge the keeper and won. Apparently Stuart scored the third but I wasn’t really paying attention. Think I was looking at the rainbows at the time but it sounded a bit weasley. Anyway he’s had enough mentions in recent weeks so it doesn’t really matter. Not a bad first half. The defensive heroes proved a solid foundation to the team and with a little gentle verbal persuation maintained the high standards we’ve put in all season. Thanks to Stoney for the goal line clearance. I had it covered really.
3-1 at half time. Not bad at all.
Re fuelled on jelly babies and a pep talk by Charles 11 gladiators in claret and blue took to the field to finish the job and get home for tea and medals but somehow yet again we managed to switch off and let Penzance back into it. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. After soaking up a little pressure the visitors were awarded a short corner. And another, and another and another and another. Comment of the day goes to Freudy at this point “ its like ground hog day this ” and he wasn’t wrong. After letting Penzance practice exactly the same routine twice they finally got it right and put it in third attempt. 3-2 hmmmm
The work rate, high as ever, saw us through however and with a little more verbal persuation we worked our way back into things and Alex finished things off with an amazing multi directional shot. Good thing there are no own goals in hockey eh Alex.
Altogether a good team performance. Hard work all round. Forwards moved well with some good probing runs. Midfield worked hard as ever and defence proved solid as always. Can’t ask for too much more than that. OPM’s win 4-2

02/12/2006 (A) vs Okehampton, South West Div 1
by Chris Frude (Finally!)
It was a crisp December morning when OPMs set out to Okehampton looking for another important win. The squad was missing Paul Evans Simon Quincey and Jason Sweby all of who were showing good form recently, (well Simon and Paul were).
The home team rattled OPMs early on as a hospital ball from Stoney put Frudey under pressure. Ok well there may have been a little faffing on the centre backs behalf but the trademark early gift to the opposition came to nothing. From there on in OPMs began to get into the swing of things. Loz Peacock bagged the first goal before Okehampton struck back after Loz got caught in possession the centre of the park. The Okehampton forward picked up the lose ball from Loz who was obviously still thinking about his recently healed nose. From there he dribbled into the D passed Charlie who missed his tackle before driving the ball home. Note to coach more training required in shoulder barging to prevent shooting opportunities! A sustained period of possession saw OPMs play some of the silkiest hockey of the season before captain Charlie drilled the ball into the D right onto the end of Stuarts stick who finished cooley. The goal had shades of Argentina’s 24 pass goal in the world cup. A few minutes later Bennett managed to bag another one from a dizzy run through about three million Okehampton defenders before slotting the ball under the keeper. It should be noted that the challenge from the keeper twisted poor stewey's ankle and we haven’t stopped hearing about it since, (at the time of writing we into a new year)! James Harding made an instant impression on the pitch after being subbed on he ran into action, chased down an Oakey midfielder and swung his stick which crashed down onto his opponents. Mel Gibson would have been proud of the attack but it was a shame filming for Braveheart had been wrapped up years before. The outburst earned Harding a yellow card and the twat of the match award. OPMs started the second half as they had ended the first, with chances, chances and more chances! Okehampton threatened occasionally and managed to score from a well taken short corner. However it was not to be the home sides day as OPMs as attacks began to turn to more goals. Two strikes from Mozza, one from a very acute angle and a further two from Stewart brought the game to a 7 -2 finish. Finally this reporter would just like to add the small matter of the penalty flick that never was. Toward the end of the game OPMs larger than life centre back sauntered up to the opposition D for a short corner. The ball slid out to Alex peacock who stopped for his brother to strike. In a dramatic twist of fate the ball was deflected back out to the centre back who took one touch before placing a pin point shot into the bottom corner of the goal. The centre back began briefly to think that the two year goal drought was up, only to be denied by the foot of an Okehampton defender. Unfortunately a penalty flick was not awarded which was probably a good thing as injuries may have been sustained by any person trying to prize the ball away from this man and his destiny. Soon my friends soon I will have my glory and no post nor cross bar nor defending foot will get in my way and the drought will be over Ha Ha Ha HA HA HA! (Apologies for these ravings but it’s really pi##ing off)! Score: Okehampton 2-7 O.P.M.OPM Scorers: Stuart Bennett (4), Martin Simpson-Scott (2), Laurence Peacock
James Harding09/12/2006 (A) vs St Austell, South West Div 1
by Simon Quincey
Christmas came early for OPM on a cold day down in St. Austell with a physical but ultimately victorious battle. It will be a game long remembered by all who participated and those who looked on, as OPM played some very competitive hockey. With the absence of Stoney and our leading MOM winner Paul Evans taken into account, suitable reinforcements were required.
It all started with a shock and awe tactic employed by some determined St. Austell attacks, which resulted in their first goal. A swift reply in the form of a well-worked short corner, finished by Laurence, put the teams back on level terms. A break away goal set the home side in front once again but another successful short corner from the OPM forwards, Mozza roofing the ball from close range, placed the foundations for an epic game. Good passing from OPM allowed Stuart to get in on the action and score the goal that put his team in front for the first time in the match. This seemed to anger the crouching tigers of St.Austell who quickly responded with two goals to put them 4-3 ahead. However, their efforts were quickly cancelled by some superb driving by the OPM forwards, which piled the pressure on the oppositions’ defence. This force resulted in three quick fire goals, two from Mozza and one from Stuart. Celebrations were difficult at this point as the OPM goal scorers and attacking midfield were practically on fire! St. Austell tried to bounce back and played some convincing hockey reversing the pressure on their visitors. However, the midfield of Alex, Laurence, Charlie and Chris Poplar continued to pass well and eased the burden on the defence. To end the half, (yes this all happened in the first half!), there was an odd decision by the umpire that lead to this reporter having to be told exactly what he’d done wrong. Stick obstruction was the verdict and both teams went into huddles for a time out, while Steve prepared himself for the flick. The tension could have been cut with a knife as both teams looked on. Keeper ready? Striker ready? *Whistle* SAVE! A “David Beckham-esk flick went mid height down the centre to be palmed away by Steve P, to the delight of his team mates – well saved Steve! OPMs went into half time with big smiles, as did the Jelly Babies, until we ate them. Refreshed and re-energised by the Jelly Babies’ E numbers, OPMs began the second half brightly, creating some positive attacks on the St. Austell goal. A mix up in defence gave the hosts a glimmer of hope as they took advantage of a rare Frudey mistake taking the score to 6-5. But as is well known every action deserves a reaction and OPM proceeded accordingly! Stuart went on to score two more goals, one a penalty flick, the other part of a good move. OPMs top scorer also went on to receive a green card for what cvan only be described as a forward’s tackle. Coming into the final quarter of the game things started to open up. Jason Sweby cropped up to add to the tally as full time drew near. Despite the fatigue OPMs continued to attack through both midfield and the forwards, forcing a goal-line clearance from James Harding’s sweeping shot. Around this time a distinct rear-guard action kicked in as the OPM defence pushed up. Finally, Laurence completed his return from injury by tucking away the final goal of a satisfying match for OPM. A quick hot-foot back to a well known pub in the Barbican was followed by a meal and a night on the town! Sadly this reporter had to work during this time but when he found his team mates he was pleased to discover them well oiled and in good spirits! It just remains for me to congratulate all who took part in this game and the celebrations afterward. Have an awesome Christmas guys and a Happy New Year! 13/01/2007 (A) vs Bodmin A, South West Div 1
by James Harding
OPMs utterly obliterated Bodmin today, (yes today, I'm writing the report the same day as the game!) managing to kick into gear following a lethargic opening to the match.
With the memory of humiliating St. Austell still fresh in our minds, the team were able to manufacture several chances early on, but the pressure was ultimately to no avail; the best opportunity came after good work down the right hand side, resulting in Frankie almost connecting with a cross which whistled past him at mach 4. The first goal finally came from a short corner, with skip Charlie thundering in an unstoppable shot which actually scorched the backboard! More goals followed from Stuart, François, Charlie, Jason, and Simon to make it 11-0 to the claret-and-blues. After the first was scored, more proceeded to flood in as we grew in confidence and Bodmin basically threw in the towel. Unfortunately I can’t remember all of the goals but they were all awesome team efforts, apart from a few of Stu’s. But hey nobody can criticise a man who’s weighed in with 23 league goals so far this season? The defensive work of Stone, Frude, Johnners, Rob, and Simon deserves mentioning for keeping Steve thoroughly bored in goal - and their attacking work was noticeable as well; Si scored having earlier hit the post with a placed shot. Frudey also managed to hit the upright, just after rattling the crossbar 30 seconds earlier! The whole team was highly committed, with midfield generals François and Lozz dictating all the play. Stuart and Jason were the epitome of work rate and stick skill. However the one let-down of the whole team was really Jim H. Almost getting himself sent off for another outrageous barge was bad enough, but he demonstrated a certain inability to hit a cow’s backside with a banjo! By this I am referring to a failure to beat the keeper from close range, not any weird fetish... To sum up, it was a thoroughly one-sided affair with OPMs demonstrating exactly the top notch hockey required to win against Exeter in the cup tomorrow! The boss says we’re going to get raped by the National League side but really we can afford to be a little more optimistic than that, methinks. I reckon we WIN on penalties after a 3-3 draw!! OPMs faced a tougher league game this weekend against Plymouth University A, who they only beat 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. With as very strong side out and needing to maintain the pressure at the top of the table, OPMs were in fighting spirit.
Witness the team photo which descended into a team brawl. ![]()

From the moment we arrived at the gates at Stonehouse on an overcast Saturday it didn’t seem it was going to be our day. It seemed to be an echo of an average Saturday night in town, with Laurence nearly not being let past security!

Three penalty corner goals and a wonder strike from Paul Evans gave OPMs a 12th consecutive unbeaten league game as they continue to push for promotion. Rob Stroud and Stuart Bennett scored in the first half from short corners, and captain Charlie Haswell scored the fourth from another short corner; but it was midfielder Paul Evans's 3rd goal which will be remembered.
Stuart Bennett hit a quick free-hit to Jason Sweby on the edge of the D who stopped the ball dead for Evans to crash into the top right-hand corner. PGs had got one back at the start of the second half from Mike Rawl. 17/02/2007 (H) vs Tavistock A, South West Division 1
by Jason Sweby
OPMs finally put on a display of the good hockey they can play to win convincingly 6-1 at home to Tavistock A and, thanks to PGs A drawing away at St Austell, went top of South West Division 1. The first half, however, was still not a convincing display, carrying on from the previous week at Marjons where players were doing the work instead of the ball and the passing was nowhere to be seen.
The game was just about tipped in favour of OPMs and when Stuart Bennett scored from Jason Sweby's pass from the backline after 25 minutes, the home side felt a sense of relief that the pressure had finally told. Moments later, Sweby had a chance to double the lead when Laurence Peacock spotted his unchecked run into the D, only for the winger to put the first time touch onto the post and wide. The half-time team-talk saw the players dressed down for the poor passing display and it wasn't until Tavi equalised 5 minutes into the second half that the captain's words appeared to have been taken in. The score was level for only a few minutes however as Sweby once again turned provider, this time for Martin Simpson-Scott who had made a terrific cross-field run from left to right, releasing the ball to Sweby who put it back into Mozza's path for a terrific 2nd goal. After that, OPMs turned on the style and started to play the hockey that should see them out of this division. After a goal mouth scramble, Alex Peacock stopped the messing around with an 'AVE IT goal from the top of the D to make it 3-1, before Mozza popped up again for his second and the home side's 4th. Simon Quincey, who started the game as right back, came back on as a substitute into the midfield and scored soon after when a short corner routine broke down but he was on hand to sweep in the loose ball. Minutes before the end of the match, Quincey again popped up inside the D and slam home OPM's sixth goal and earn himself a brace and the Man of the Match award. By the end of the game, every man on the pitch deserved that accolade; Steve Payne was massive in goal, Captain Charlie, Ian Stone and François Ravin had terrific games at the back, while Laurence and Alex Peacock were talismen in the midfield. 24/02/2007 (A) vs Truro B, South West Division 1
by Chris Frude
OPM's travelled away to Truro where the game started in a scrappy fashion as both teams conceded early goals. Truro's first equalizer came courtesy of an amazing drag flick from a short corner routine which stunned the away side. The Truro midfielder managed to hook the ball in his impossibly bendy stick before roofing it in the OPM net. Steve Payne only had time to wave at the ball as it flashed past him approaching the speed of light.
It didnt take long for OPM's to creep ahead again as Loz converted a penalty flick but Truro again equalized shortly afterward. Somewhere in the middle of this Mr Frude was savagely attacked by a stick waving mad man in Truro colours and decide he wasn't having any of it. The power of ten tigers was summoned to 'horizontalise the fool' just before the power of one umpire was summoned to send Mr Frude to have a think about it in the sin bin. Ten mins later OPM's were back to full strength and went into half time four two up. However it could have been more especially when Stew did all the hard work dribbling the ball around the keeper before siding the ball onto the post of an open goal. What a goon!. After the break things started looking a bit more like they should have. The momentum picked up just before the break carried us on and chances came flying. Mr Sweby had numerous chances to increase the lead as a string of passes / shots found their way to the back post on to the end of his stick only to find themselves deflected wide. However in a strange twist of events Mr Bennett drove the ball into the D only to find himself blocked by defenders and no shot on. Time and space stood still as the rest of the team watched on to see Stew unselfishly slide the ball to Jason at the top of the D who finished the move with a net bursting shot, at last the man had his goal! (J you owe me a pint for that sentence!). Our man Mozza on the left wing had a stunning game, even if most of it was spent on the floor nursing cuts and bruises. His game was capped off by a gorgeous run from the halfway line all the way into the opposition before firing the ball under the keeper, Christiano Ronaldo eat your heart out! A shout must go out to Alex who scored from an excellent short corner routine, and who along with Loz, Frankie and Paul in midfield controlled the game. Charlie and Stoney were coolness personified throughout and Steve decided that one drag flick was enough to concede in one day and pulled off a great save from an even more outrageous reverse drag flick.....Have you ever hear of such a thing! A special pat on the back goes to super sub Frosty who came on in the second half and played like he has always been in the squad. Lets keep it up its ours to lose and I don't want to! 03/03/2007 (H) vs Camborne School of Mines, South West Division 1
by Jason Sweby
OPMs turned on the style to maintain top position in South West Division 1 with a 10-2 home win against Camborne School of Mines. Predictably, OPMs made hard work of the first half, twice taking the lead only to let the opposition back in both times.
Stuart Bennett gave the home side the lead in the 11th minute with a powerful shot from the top of the D after a solo run. Camborne were level 6 minutes later from a short corner; OPM's Alex Peacock then scored from a short corner with a flick but it was ruled out by umpire Harding. It took Martin Simpson-Scott's terrific run from the far left-byline, into the D and cracking shot to restore the lead on the 28th minute and so it remained until half-time. OPMs have been starting stronger in the second half this season but the visitors rattled their hosts with an equaliser in the 39th minute, again from a short corner. The lead lasted only 4 minutes however when Bennett struck again to make it 3-2, before 2 further goals from Bennett (his hat-trick) and Simpson-Scott in the same 2 minutes put the game out of Camborne's grasp at 5-2. Simpson-Scott completed his hat-trick just minutes later to make it 6-2, before Paul Evans's reverse sweep made it 7. Jason Sweby's solo run and shot on 63 minutes was blocked on the line but Bennett was there to tap in the rebound, then Laurence Peacock scored a deserved goal 2 minutes later, a smashing shot from the top of the D into the far corner: 9-2. Jason Sweby finally picked up a well-earned goal as well just 3 minutes from time, picking up on a saved shot from Mozza, and Alex Peacock was unlucky not to score a deserved goal when his strike from the middle of the D was deflected wide by Bennett. Stuart Bennett's 4 goals take him to 35 league goals for the season and so passes the club's previous record of 33 goals by ex-OPM player Chris Vinson. It should also be noted that Bennett has scored in the last 11 league games on the trot. (Thanks to James H & Gary for umpiring and to James for the times of the goals)Score: O.P.M. 10-2 Camborne SoM
