27/09/2003 (A) vs United Services H.C. Plymouth A, Friendly
by Paul Mingo
After borrowing two players from United Services, OPM's were able to field a full side. Both teams were solid defensively and the first half saw hardly any shots on goal. It wasn't until the second half that both teams increased on thier offense. After a long spell of pressure by OPM's (US's keeper had to make some great saves), Captain Nick Langridge lifted the ball over the floored keeper after a Steve Copper shot to get the winning goal. Everybody had a good game today and it was a joy to watch quick and efficient passing down the wings. Very well umpired by US's Nick Carter.

04/10/2003 (H) vs Okehampton, South-Central District 1
by Paul Mingo
OPM's started well, having most of the possession, but couldn't get a shot on Okehampton's goal. The home team's defence did a great job holding off Okehampton's offence, but after an unfortunate goal (redirection off OPM defender's stick, off the post, rebound off the back of the OPM keeper's stick and into the goal), OPM's spirits fell. Another goal was conceded from a short corner and the first half ended 0-2.
The second half was more of the same. Despite some patches of good play by OPM's and a shot just wide by Russell Owen-Moody, Okehampton turned up the pressure and the second half ended 0-5. Thank God for the burgers and hotdogs at The Masonic.

11/10/2003 (A) vs PGSOB B, South-Central District 1
by Steve Copper
OPM's started well, taking the lead with a goal from Jack Allman within the first 15 minutes. Then followed a period of play in which there were about 5 attempts by PG's to score, each time the defence held firm and repelled each attack. Unfortunately this sustained period had the desired effect and PG's scored the equaliser on the 6th attack. Another short period of good play by the OPM's resulted in them attacking the oppositions goal and obtaining a short corner. Steve Copper scored from this chance to take the score to 2-1. Although attacking play was more dominant from PG's the OPMs managed to hold them off until moments before the half time whistle the ball was stopped from entering the OPM goal by Ian Stone's foot resulting in a penalty stroke. Although Paul Mingo got to the ball it was deflected into the goal levelling the score.
PG's came out strong after the break so much so that they scored 2 goals, this had a demoralising effect on the boys in blue, who seemed to spend the rest of the second half playing individually not as a team. On one of the few attempts that we had on their goal Keith Pullan managed to get the ball past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 3-4. This was how it was until the very end of the second half where OPM's managed to secure a short corner. This was the last chance to level the score line. Unfortunately this was not to be and the final whistle was sounded in mid play trying to attack their goal.

18/10/2003 (H) vs Ashmoor, South-Central District 1
by Rob Logan
The well oiled super fit O.P.M mean machine took to the pitch against Ashmoor with trepidation not in fear of the opponents but the fact that Rob Logan was to play !!!!!! The inclusion of Logan however helped to widened the age gap considerably against an opposition whose average age was 16?ish.
O.P.M.'s were soon on the defensive with Ashmoor having a very lively right winger who caused havoc when he ran at our defence. Ashmoor scored two goals from short corners early on with the ball seeming to pass through several sticks on its way to the goal, they also score 3 times from open play before the halftime whistle.
O.P's goal came after a break from Patterson was cynically halted illegally and a stoke was awarded even though the ball ended up in the back of the net from Pattersons initial effort. Cue Ian "CALLUM GILES" Stone to calmly (so I am told, couldn't bear to look) slot the ball home with a clever flick using the keepers gloves to full advantage!!!! O.P.M. had a numerical advantage shortly before the break with Arthur Norfolk getting a reaction from one of his subtle comments to his younger opponent, he reacted by kicking out at the startled Norfolk and received his ten minutes in the bin.
Halftime came and went, too quickly for some of us and O.P's started the second half with a renewed spring in their step which saw their best spell of hockey this season. Unfortunately Ashmoor scored 2 more before the end despite the efforts of messr`s Horton, Stone, Norfolk & Mingo to keep the second half scoreless. A mention should go to the midfield sextet of Langridge, Loze, Taylor, Copper Rose & Patterson for their secondhalf preformances and the lone front man who on another day would have.............................................. been blowing a whistle.
T.O.T.M. Rob Logan for throwing his stick under the fence and having a job to retrieve it.
M.O.M. (joint) Ian Stone & Matt Taylor.
Special mention. Nick Langridge`s centre spot restart which went straight into our D hitting Mr Norfolk on the foot..........He was tying his shoelaces at the time?????

Score: O.P.M. A 1-7 Ashmoor
OPM Scorer: Ian Stone (pen)
Team: Paul Mingo, Steve Copper, Arthur Norfolk, John Horton, Ian Stone, Ian Loze, Alisdair Rose, Nick Langridge, Matt Taylor, Luke Patterson, Rob Logan.

25/10/2003 (A) vs Tavistock A, South-Central District 1
by Paul Mingo
Due to Tavistock starting with only nine players, OPM's started very strongly and used the space to keep the play in Tavi's half. After seven minutes Tavi gained an extra player, but this did not stop OPM's assault on goal. Following a few saves from Tavi's keeper Nick eventually got the first goal, which opened the flood gates for many more. The second goal came minutes later, when Luke shot at goal from a tight angle. Even though the keeper managed to get a shoulder to the ball, the rebound went in. OPM's defence had very little to do, but after a Tavi short corner John Horton had to make a stick save on the goal line. Nearing the end of the first half, Jason Carr hit the ball across the 'D' and Russell Owen-Moody was on hand to touch the ball into the far side of the goal behind the keeper. The fourth goal came, once again, from the Jason/Russell partnership. Jason hit the ball straight down the pich and into the 'D', where Russell was waiting with his face of his stick angled, ramp-like, along the floor to pop the ball over the keeper like Evel Knevel. Apparently this needed to be seen in slow motion, like the winning goal of a Hollywood sport film, to properly portray its magnificence.
After a quick half time break OPM's were raring to go. The fifth and sixth goals came from the brute force of Captain Steve Copper's short corner strikes. Mid way through the second half Jason slipped and injured his knee, making him retire from the game and equalising the two sides in number of players. Tavi were now able to create more offense and Keeper Paul had to make a number of saves. The seventh goal came after Alasdair shot at goal and a Tavi defender deflected the ball to Russell, who dribbled away from the goal. Turned, and shot at goal. Okay his first swing completed missed the ball, but his second swing was true as the loud smack of the back boards proved.

15/11/2003 (A) vs Plymouth University B, South-Central District 1
by Rob Logan
O.P.M.`s had only 9 players and an umpire before the game, however the Uni very generously let Rob play and supplied both umpires. O.P.M. started well and seemed up for the challenge against a fast and fit looking uni side. Uni deservedly took the lead after some sustained pressure on the O.P.M. rear guard of Horton snr, Copper and Honey before they managed to squeeze the ball past captain Mingo in goal. This you would have thought would have opened the floodgate against 10 man O.P.`s however it had the reverse affect with O.P.`s coming back with vengeance. Before half time the hard working O.P.M. midfield of Loze,Pullen, Wass, Logan. G, and the struggling Logan senior had the ball in the Uni net twice without reply. The first was from a Copper short corner that Patterson, O.P.`s lone front man turned past the keeper, the second from a Copper reverse sweep at another short corner. Half time came with the arrival of a first team player Horton jnr who was allowed to take the field following discussion with the umpires and Uni captain and the consultation of the league handbook (rule 7.4 )? This had the Uni playing even harder to try and pull the result around which they did although they had to work hard to beat some staunch defending. The first goal came from a short corner, the second when the ball fell kindly to the only Uni player not mark he was able to place his shot well into the corner. The result was a little unlucky on O.P`s on another day the ball might have run a bit kinder for us. Although man of the match was S. Copper the whole team should take credit from this performance. Finally a special mention to the umpires who were superb and let an enjoyable game be played to its full potential.

17/01/2004 (H) vs PGSOB B, South-Central District 1
by Rob Logan
O.P.M had only nine players due to unavailability? 11 people unavailable !!!!! Would have been 10 but someone failed to turn up!
However the nine keep the score at 0-0 until a short corner was converted on the stroke of halftime. PGs scored again within 3 minutes of the second half and then scored three times in as many minutes with 8 minutes remaining, this seemed to inspire OPMs with Russell bringing a superb save from the keeper and Luke unfortunately beating the keeper and the far post. OPMs scored with the last hit of the match from a Copper short corner. Everyone should take heart from this preformance, hopefully the 11 players who were unavailable will return to help ease the burden on those who play regularly?

The game started badly with O.P.M conceding two in the first ten minutes both well taken short corner routines, Uni then scored again via a cross shot that went in off the far post and another shot well placed into the corner of the net from the top of the `D`. 4-0 down with ten minutes to half time everyone knackered, cue the Luke and Russ show, ball played wide to Luke who outstripped the defence and crossed for Russ to score the goal of the season, flashing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the uni net with their keeper a mere spectator. Charlie then found Luke who played in Russ for another although he had to work hard to get into a goal scoring position. 4-2 with 5 mins to half -time and O.P.M`s sensed a comeback even quipping we are too far behind to lose this? Following another O.P.M. attack Gareth had the ball under the keeper who somehow managed to sit on it and deflect it wide (when your lucks out its out). Pete found himself with a chance next which their sweeper, who had a good game trying to handle Russ, managed to deflect away from the goal.
Halftime came with comments like ' we can win this' and ' pass Rob the oxygen'; the magnificent eight went back onto the pitch early to show the Uni we meant business. If the first half was the Russ and Luke show the second was definitely the Paul show he made some breathtaking saves which even had the Uni boys cheering as they all took up his challenge to try and put the ball past him. With John and Rob helping him out at the back Paul kept out nearly everything thrown at him, with some spectacular diving saves, he was beaten twice once with a drag- flicked short corner and another a well placed shot from the top of the D, he also had Rob and John to thank for goal line clearances.
I will mention everyone who played with honour: -
P.Mingo, R.Logan,J.Horton,C.Irish,P.Honey,G.Logan,L.Patterson,R.Owen-Moody.
